tanahMALAyu - Google sedang membina satu kumpulan 100 kereta elektrik tanpa peman-du dan berharap dapat memulakan mengujinya menjelang akhir tahun ini. Mereka mung-kin mengambil sedikit untuk membiasakan diri, tanpa stereng atau pedal, semasa mereka buat sementara waktu akan mempunyai satu kelajuan tertinggi 25mph.

Projek ini telah beberapa tahun dalam membuat. Sehingga kini, Google telah memasang semula kereta yang sedia ada, terutamanya Lexus dengan radar, sensor, peralatan navi-gasi dan kamera, dan juga komputer untuk menjadikannya memandu dengan sendirinya.

Google is building a fleet of 100 electric driverless cars and hopes to start testing them by the end of the year. They may take a bit of getting used to, with no steering wheel or pedals, while they will temporarily have a top speed of 25mph.

This project has been several years in the making. Up until now, Google had refitted existing cars, mainly Lexus’s with radars, sensors, navigation equipment and cameras, as well as computers to make it drive by itself. However, during this period, they had secretly been working on their own prototype, which will have no controls that humans can use, except for an emergency stop button, as well as a start button.

This is the ultimate aim, but during the test stage, in order to comply with Californian law, the automated cars will have a wheel and pedals. This has certainly given the Californian Department of Motor Vehicles something to think about: they have to write the regulations for the ‘operational’ use of truly driverless cars.

The DMV had thought that the reality was several years away, so it would have time to perfect the rules. That clock just sped up, said the head of the DMV's driverless car program, Bernard Soriano. "Because of what is potentially out there soon, we need to make sure that the regulations are in place that would keep the public safe but would not impede progress," Soriano added.

Google’s co-founder, Sergey Brin, who has played a big part in the operation, started the project in 2009. The team has already managed to rack up hundreds of thousands of miles driving around California in regular cars, but now they want to go it alone.

“The main reason the team and I decided to build this prototype vehicle is that we can do a better job than we can do with an existing vehicle,” said Google’s co-founder. “The project is about changing the world for people who are not well-served by transportation today.”

It is unknown which manufacturer will be given the contract to build the 100 cars, but Brin thinks it will be some time yet before the cars appear, despite promising earlier that they would be on the roads by 2017.

One can forget about going for a spin off road, as the cars only work in built up areas. The automated vehicles operate by using data that has been accumulated, which is transferred into highly detailed maps. The car is also able to constantly scan the surrounding area.

Chris Urmson, who is the director of Google's self-driving car project, said the aim was to run extended tests in California where the company is based. Urmson argued driverless cars would improve road safety, calling the development "an important step toward improving road safety and transforming mobility for millions of people."

Meanwhile, Brin says he is excited that the new prototype could have a massive effect on changing people’s lives for the better. "If you look at people who are too old, too young, or disabled, and can't get around, that's a big challenge for them," the co-Google founder added.

The vehicle has two seats, a screen displaying the route and a top speed of 25mph (40kmh). An array of sensors allows the vehicle's computer to determine its location and surroundings and it can ‘see’ ahead several hundred meters, according to Google.

“A full-scale military operation has begun in Kramatorsk and Slavyansk. BM-21 launch vehicle “Grad” are being used,” Donbas-based Ostrov agency says.

Anti-government protesters in Slavyansk have downed a Ukrainian forces helicopter in the south-east of Slavyansk, Donetsk region, eastern Ukraine, a local witness told Itar-Tass.

“Intensive shooting has been heard in the region, and thick black smoke seen,” he added.

Pada hari Rabu sekolah dan tadika telah dikupas di dlm Slavyansk. Di tadika sekurang-kurangnya 9 orang awam yg tercedera, termasuk seorang budak 4 tahun.

Seorang guru dari sekolah yang disasarkan berkata mortar meletup kanan di atas dewan sekolah, di mana kanak-kanak biasanya berkumpul untuk acara-acara perayaan, dan seba-hagian daripada bumbung "yg telah hanya terpesona."

Nasib baik, tiada kanak-kanak berada dalam dewan pada masa itu. Semua murid-murid dan guru-guru telah cepat dipindahkan ke tingkat bawah tanah.

On Wednesday a school and a kindergarten were shelled in Slavyansk. In the kindergarten at least 9 civilians were injured, including a 4-year old boy.

A teacher from a targeted school said that the shell exploded right above the school hall, where children are usually gathered for festive events, and part of the roof “was simply blown away.” Luckily, no children were in the hall at the time. All the pupils and teachers were quickly evacuated to the basement.

'Death of money': Author Rickards predicts collapse of global monetary system . . .

The collapse of the monetary system awaits the world in the near future, says financial expert James Rickards. Russia and China's desire to rid the US dollar of its global reserve currency status is an early sign of the “increasingly inevitable” crisis.

“China has three trillion dollars, but they are buying gold as fast as they can. China worries that the US is going to devalue the dollar through inflation so they want to have a hedge if the dollar goes down, so the gold will go up,” Rickards told RT.

As one of the key events in support of his forecast, Rickards points to the words uttered by Russian President Vladimir Putin at the 18th International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg that took place earlier this month.

“Putin said he envisions a Eurasian economic zone involving Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and Russia. The Russian ruble is nowhere near ready to be a global reserve currency, but it could be a regional reserve currency,” he said, as quoted by ETF Daily News.

Rickards’ book about the demise of the dollar was released in April under quite an apocalyptic name – 'The Death of Money.' However, the author is surprised that the events are unfolding much faster than he predicted.

“If anything, the tempo of events is faster than expected. Therefore, some of these catastrophic outcomes may come sooner than I wrote about.”

Last Wednesday, China and Russia signed a historic US$400 billion gas deal which will provide the world's fastest growing economy with the natural gas it needs to keep pace for the next 30 years. Experts say this could be the catalyst that dethrones the greenback as the world's reserve currency.

The best-selling author writes that the “linchpin” of the collapse is the approaching failure of the dollar since it is at the foundation of the system. Powerful countries such as Russia, China, Iran, and India do not rely on the US in their national security and would benefit from the US economy being weaker, thus desiring to break free from the dollar standard.

He elaborates that the dual collapse “looks increasingly inevitable.”

“The mistakes have already been made. The instability is already in the system. We’re just waiting for that catalyst that I call the snowflake that starts the avalanche,” he said, as quoted by ETF.

There are three big international factors that are pressuring the dollar right now – Russia, China, and Saudi Arabia.

“Since the 1970s, Saudi Arabia [has been] the leader in what’s called the petrodollar. It basically means that Saudi Arabia and, by extension, OPEC, price oil in dollars, so the world market is in dollars.

“Russia is a major natural resource exporter; they price their exports in dollars as well. But Russia now is engaged in a financial war with the US around the issues in Crimea and Ukraine.”

The threats to the dollar are “ubiquitous,” the author states in his book. The only way the US can pay off its $17 trillion debt is with inflation, which would drive other countries away from the dollar while the accumulation of gold by Russia and China presages the shift to a new reserve asset.

“The next time we will have a liquidity crisis in the world it’s going to be bigger than the ability of central banks to deal with it. The IMF will basically have to bail out the world by printing the SDRs (an international reserve asset created by the IMF in 1969 to supplement its member countries' official reserves). By that time, you will see the SDR emerge as the new global world currency,” Rickards told RT.
